James M. McPherson’s Q & A

Today’s The Troy Messenger has a recap of Dr. James M. McPherson’s Q&A with a local enthusiast group.

“For the South, the principle issue of the Civil War was independence,” McPherson said. “For the North, it was national sovereignty. Slavery was not out of the equation entirely but it was a secondary issue. The Union was preserved and that brought an end to slavery.”
