Lincoln did indeed abhor slavery, but he never did fully believe that blacks were completely equal with whites.  He stated as much during one debate with Stephen Douglas.  

Early in his presidency, Lincoln&#039;s main goal, of course, was the preservation of the Union.  He only gradually came to fully accept abolition as the proper course for the country.
