Texas Gov. Rick Perry Backs Sovereignty Resolution ?

Civil War Part II?

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry joined state Rep. Brandon Creighton and sponsors of House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 50 in support of states’ rights under the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. “That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”

Perry continued: “Millions of Texans are tired of Washington, DC trying to come down here to tell us how to run Texas.”

Gov. Perry is not too tired of the oppressive federal government not to demand FEMA fork over millions in disaster relief and crews of firefighters as well. He is also not too tired of the federal government to demand that the major military installments, in San Antonio and elsewhere be relocated. His weariness is of recent vintage, since he didn’t find the creation of the DHS or the Patriot Act particularly instrusive or oppressive.

But mostly Gov. Perry is not too tired of the federal government not to plan to run for national office and to do a little showboating to build name recognition.

Hardly seems like the beginning of another rebellion. The stimulus money is coming with strings attached; Mr. Perry is trying to cut the strings and score a few political points in the process.

The overblown reaction to Mr. Perry’s speechifying along with the recent Homeland Security report on the growing right-wing menace (?!) makes me wonder when exactly quoting the Constitution started being seen as somehow radical.

  3. Chris says:

Ben you might want to check today’s news as Mr. Perry is claiming that Texas has the right to leave the Union.

Texas hardly worries me, however, the Federal Government does:

This article, if true, really is something else. It is certainly a change that we can depend on. “Radical Right Wing” attacks. Wow, and if you look at the report, it says “Terrorists” in it yet I thought that was just “Man Made Disasters,” oh wait that is only in the case of Jihadists and Islam extremists.

Can you imagine what the media would have done, and not to mention a lot of other people, if a Republican administration had issues a “Radical Left Wing” warning such as this!? I’m sorry, on what grounds do they have to issue this. Sad.

Speaking with reporters after a tea party rally in Austin today, Gov. Rick Perry said Texas can leave the union if it wants to.

“Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that,” Perry said.

Just FYI, on Perry’s 1845 statement, Texas came into the union with the ability to divide into five states, not withdraw. After seceding during the Civil War, Texas was allowed to re-enter the union after ratifying the 13th Amendment. The 13th Amendment banned slavery in the United States and any territory subject to its jurisdiction.

UPDATED: Texas v White, a U.S. Supreme Court case decided in 1869, said Texas cannot secede.

Perry is either ignorant or thinks his audience is….or both.

  5. Mark Anderson says:

Rick Perry is an idiot. I’ve voted against him at every opportunity and will continue to do so throughout his ongoing and, hopefully short, political career.

He was pandering to the crowd at that rally…which seems to be his modus entire.
