I always heard that Pleasant Walker "Peter" Adair was killed at Fort Blakely by a Negro. I didn't know until I read this story what it ment "killed by a Negro". I didn't know there was a Black Union Troop there. Pleasant Walker Adair was the brother of Col. Thomas Nepolean Adair (Adaire). My great grandfather James C. Adair was also a brother. Pleasant, Thomas and James also had a brother, (William Henry Adair) that was killed by a bouncing cannon ball at Big Black Bridge, Vicksburg. He is buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, MS.

Pleasant Walker Adair's wife and children moved to Dallas County, Texas because she could not stay in Mississippi after her husband was killed.

I would agree, when we get into discussion of "political correctness" we can never find a sound footing. It is an ideological and political tool used to discredit the "other side." Now does it occur, yes, so where does that leave us? I wish I knew.

I think we should hesitate before jumping to the conclusion that the lack of writing on alleged atrocities at Ft. Blakely is due to "political correctness." There are any number of reasons why certain information may not appear in an article: space considerations, an inability to smoothly fit it into the narrative, or a lack of reputable sources. For all we know, the author did write about atrocities and the editor(s) cut it out.

And just what is "the truth," anyhow? Have you done extensive research into the allegations of atrocities at Blakely? (If you have, let's hear it!) It sounds as though you've already made up your mind based on a few quotes in the blog post. I don't mean to belabor the obvious, but is that not a form of PC?

It is, of course, a despicable but understandable event when victorious soldiers execute POW's, regardless the war. In the American Civil War, it happened as with, I'm certain, every other major conflict throughout history.

What concerns me the most is the political correctness that hinders the historian's ability to acknowledge and disseminate the truth.
